Massive Recruitment Opportunity to work in Canada for 10,000 FCFA (Misleading)

Claim: A TikTok video posted by official_princess_eva_19 on October 16, 2023 claims that there is a massive recruitment opportunity for Cameroonians to work in Canada for a fee of 10,000 FCFA. CDEM, a Canadian organisation that promotes economic development in Manitoba’s bilingual municipalities, organises the recruitment, the video says. The video also provides registration procedures for interested candidates.

Misleading. The video is misleading and does not provide accurate information about the massive recruitment opportunity. The video explains that with 10,000 FCFA you can travel to Canada upon selection but the 10,000 FCFA is simply a registration fee after the selection process for selected candidates. Further information will be sent via email to selected participants about the recruitment. The selection process is based on the eligibility for immigration to Manitoba and based on the needs of the Canadian labour market. Consult the list of occupations in demand in Manitoba. The number of people for the massive recruitment was not stated either in the TikTok post or on their website.

Claim Analysis

The TikTok video posted by official_princess_eva_19 has received over 2,274 likes, 263 comments, and 2,976 shares as of October 26, 2023. The post received several sceptical comments from potential participants, who expressed doubts about the massive recruitment legitimacy, cost, and safety and the organisers. Therefore, I had to fact check the post to verify the accuracy and credibility of the information and to address the concerns or questions raised by the comments. Some of the comments read;

“Why would you pay money to them if they already recruited you?? Something is off. I wouldn’t say do not go there, but instead be careful”, “Just asking, there are soo many Cameroonian in Canada without documents, like the asylum seekers, they should grant them papers and recruit them.”, “You just said 10k ? And how do we know this is safe?”, “after the registration they will never hear from them again”. and “Why is the location/venue not added”

We visited the official website of CDEM and found the following information:

  • CDEM offers various services and programs for entrepreneurs, job seekers, communities, organizations, teachers, and immigrants who speak French in Manitoba.
  • CDEM has a valid security certificate that encrypts the data exchanged between the website and the user. You can check the security certificate by looking for a padlock icon or https in the address bar of your browser.
  • CDEM provides clear and accurate contact information, such as an email address, a phone number, and a physical address. You can verify the contact information by calling, emailing, or visiting the website’s location.
  • CDEM has a moderate trust score of 76% according to ScamDoc, which is a website that analyzes the trustworthiness of websites based on technical criteria.

Suspicion with the website

We found only one suspicious thing about the website: the owner of the domain name hid their identity and contact details in the Whois database, which means that the person or organization who registered the website did not make them publicly available. They could have done this for privacy reasons, but it could also indicate a lack of transparency or accountability.

Registration Process

We also checked the recruitment page of CDEM and found the following information:

The program does not charge any fees for its services. It covers the costs of travel, accommodation, and training for selected candidates.

  • CDEM recruits qualified workers from Cameroon and other African countries to work in Manitoba through its program called “Destination Manitoba”.
  • The program aims to facilitate the integration of French-speaking immigrants into Manitoba’s bilingual communities and labour market.
  • The registration can only be done through an online form on the website of CDEM, not via email. The state requires a curriculum vitae before the application can go through.
  • The selection is based on the eligibility and suitability of the candidates for the Canadian labour market. The candidates must meet specific criteria such as having a valid passport, being between 18 and 45 years old, having at least a high school diploma or equivalent, having at least two years of work experience in a relevant field, being fluent in French and English, being willing to live and work in Manitoba, etc.

Conclusion

Based on our investigation, we conclude that the claim that CDEM is recruiting Cameroonians to work in Canada for 10,000 FCFA is false. It is a scam that aims to deceive and exploit unsuspecting job seekers. We recommend that you do not follow or share this video or any similar ones. We also suggest that you report it to TikTok and the relevant authorities.
