For democracy to function, public figures need to be held to account for what they say. The claims they make need to be checked, openly and impartially. Politicians, like anyone else, should not be immune from the reach of the common sense that we apply in our own lives. The process of holding our elected representatives to account has been labelled “public scrutiny”.
